Is a 360 a big block or small block????

Post by 71Ford »

I keep seeing ebay listings stating that the 390 is a big block. I also see postings from people on this site saying that a 360 is the same block as the 390. I've had chevrolets all my life....my last truck was a 454 big block and it looked (valve covers anyway) larger than a chev. 350's valve covers. My 360 Ford reminds me of the chevrolet 350 small block in the looks dept; but, I know that Chev. used to have a 396 big block ...so anyway my question once again is, is my ford 360 a small block or big block.

Thanks....and pardon my ignorance. :D

360 is a big block, so is the 352 and the 332. They are all basically the same blocks with different cores.

Same deal with the chevy 400, it's a small block right?

It is really neither.

It is an FE. It is kind of like the 348/409 chevy of the ford world.

When most people refer to a Big Block Ford they mean a 385 series LIMA (429/460) A small block they usually mean a Windsor (302/289/351) Ford also made the Cleveland, Y block and FE/FT series.

If you are trying to clasify it, it is a big block, but if you are buying stuff you are alot safer to call it an FE!

I'm not certian but I think the "bigblock" term came out when chevy started making their larger series engines instead of just the 283/327/350 size.

just as a funny... I always refered to the FE ford as a FAT ENGINE
and a darn good reliable powerplant too!

they have the charicteristics of a big block in size, weight, and use, but
I just tend to think of them as a FE and it saves the confusion with the 429/460 as they are bigger in the cubic inch displacement department.

I guess I've always thought of the 429/460 engines AND the FE engines as big blocks, and the 289/302/351W and 351C/400M as small blocks.

thats good!

------
yeah I geuss the FE is pretty much a bigblock since they were the bigger option in the cars of the sixties ie: opting for the 390 instead of a 289.

I stand corrected,
Keith is right... especialy when you do the math and
a 428 has more actual cubic inches than a 429!
