Whats the easiest way to remove the bed?

Post by Ranchero50 »

Getting ready to do the diesel swap in the F-250 and want the bed gone so I can flip the cab back for some rust repairs and to get it out of the way as well. I pulled the plastic bed liner out last night and saw the carriage bolts (and some rust in the bed...) I'm trying to figure out how the lift it off the frame in one peice without screwing it up.

I'm considering rigging it off the frame with a chain fall via some 2x4's placed under the bed rail. Is there an easier way? I can lower it onto a big dolly that I refinished my farm tractor on to roll it out of the way.

Thanks in advance.

The way I did it once I removed the bolts was lift it off with my dad's help. However, it would have been easier with a couple more people. Once you get over the tires, it will slide right off.

Remember, there are two bolts that you can't see near the bumper. I didn't realize that until I tried to lift the bed off.

Good luck.

weld up a "X" out of 2" angle iron, square tubing, pipe, what ever you got laying around long enough to fit under the lip of the bed rails. hook a chain in the middle and lift it off with an engine crane. drive truck out from under it.

15 minute job if you just torch the nuts off the bed bolts.

Watch out with those plastic bed liners, they're bad news. They trap water underneath and rub the steel of the bed when they vibrate, the perfect recipe for rust. I wish I had pictures of the bed in my '83, there was only about 15% of the floor left for that very reason.

You can Remove the bed from the Cab by cutting the frame and all the lines (including the drive shaft) between the Cab and the Bed.

ohhh...was that not what you ment??? :D

8 bolts to the frame and one electric plug. 2 Guys can lift it off, but 4 is better. 1 guy with a few 2x4s as rails could slide it off the back.

Yeah, the liner was in there when I got it and probably not go back in. The floor is in decent shape with some rust above the toolbox and the normal two holes where the front diagonal braces weld on.

I used a nylon motorcycle tie-down in each corner and my cherry picker. Piece of cake.

Burned off two nuts, ran out of Oxygen... Maybe tomorow...

Nothing quite so much fun as crawling under a hot truck on a hot sticky day and running a torch...

When you work twelve hour days and home is fifteen miles away you sure can. Hopeefully my buddy will stop by to refill his tanks since I used most of it on his jeep project last week.
