Unknown coil spring part..

Post by Darrman »

Ok, I took out the front suspension yesterday, and found something different. I removed these lower coil seats and on one side found the flat metal part underneath, no idea what its for. On the other side, just the coil seat, nothing underneath.
Do I have to have two? I am finding all sorts of crap wrong as I go on this truck, so it wouldnt surprise me. Like the fact that the previous owners installed the proper coils, but got em installed wrong, long coil on the drivers instead of the passengers.

Thanks for any help!

could be since they got it wrong they had a shim made to make it go back to level or almost level up front?

Yes, there are supposed to be one of those underneath each coil spring seat. I have no idea why yours doesn't, unless a previous owner had the truck apart and just neglected to replace one of them.

Well that sucks, I see how it works now, like a leveling spacer for the coil seat. I checked the old rad arms and can see the outline of the spacer on one, not the other, so it didnt fall off somewhere here.
I guess I will see if anyone here wants to sell me one.
Thanks for the help!

When I had my front end off the truck several years ago, one of the leveling spacers was badly rotted and was about to fall off the truck. That could of happened to yours. I found another one at a local salvage yard for a couple of bucks.

Ok, another question, I got my new coils in the other day, and noticed something. The original style coils had a longer coil for v8, right. So why are these LMC coils same length but the passenger coil is beefier?
Is this going to work ok, I dont see why not, but where the coil is held by the upper retainer to the coil bucket, does the bracket fit around this thicker coil?
Thanks!

The engine/transmission is offset to the passenger side, so on a factory coil the passenger-side coil is longer. That's just to support the extra weight...something which can also be achieved by having a coil the same length but slightly beefier. Same destination, different routes.

I would think the retaining strap will still work, though it might not fit quite as good.
