I just received my new shift collar from Dennis Carpenter and it came unpainted of course. It seems to have a protective coating that is kind of gold colored. My '71 truck is the original Bahama blue and I doubt I will paint it anytime soon. Should I paint the shift collar or just leave it the primed color? I'm not even sure of the answer to the following questions:
Where do I buy the paint to match the color?
Can I buy a small spray can that would match?
Do I need to prep the new part for painting?
To Paint or Not to paint that is the question

Well some body shop suppliers can mix and put in a rattle can any color you want . But a store like that will have to be a big chain type. To answer question 3 yes you will have to prep. It will take a product called zinc chromate to prep it with but this stuff is very lung nasty. You have to use this stuff on any thing that has a galvanized coating or aluminum or potmetal like the shift collar.
