Stopping rust

Post by mljjones67 »

Ok guys I started tearing the front off this week and I ran into some pretty nasty rust issues. Question what is the best product out there to kill rust? I want it stopped so I can weld some pieces back on to get the strength back.
Here are the pics
This one is on the drivers side. There was 6 inches of very fine dirt in there.

You remember the show Full House?

As Joey used to say "Cut it out!"

sorry, I have tried many differant things and Metal=ready from POR-15 is the only stuff that I have used that works. Some say Oshro (or something like that) work. I can not get it around here, so I don't know for sure.

I thought I would never see someone quoting "Full House" on a Ford truck website.

The apocolypse has arrived.

Mike, it looks like you've got your work cut out for you... literally.

You might also consider Rust-bullet... unlike Por-15, it can be sprayed. THere was one guy on this site that's used it and said it worked well, but it would be a good choice for treating those areas you might not be able to reach very well.

Depends on what you want to do with truck in long run. As bad as that looks, I'd think seriously about sandblaster, cutting out, welding in and sealing new metal with something. When drain areas get plugged with leaves/sticks, they'll build up dams and hold dirt/silt/water and rust starts from inside out. I'd also go along whole truck right now and look for plugged drains.

just relooked at your pix, I would definately consider sandblast before anything, because you probably have adjoining areas that'll either blow out due to sandblaster or welder (get's thin). Then weld in good metal and either epoxy prime whole repaired area or seal in some fashion. I coated new floorpans with POR-15 as an added precaution and that was after sandblast. But, I am very paranoid about every speck of rust.

Not yet... I want to order some for my bumper and to treat one of my inner fenders (around the battery tray), but I've been too lazy to order it. It's on my list, though...

I thought of something else for you too. You need to check where your leaks are coming from and I found my wiper transmissions were leaky and had to unbolt those and reseal, because they run right through the cowl. You might check these and windshield gasket too, just a thought, have a good one, Banjo.
