Drive Line Angle

Post by MadMaxetc »

OK. I got the 300 & T-5 in the truck, now I need to ask you guys a question.

Is it more important to have the Carb Level or the Drive shaft angle the same as stock? :?

I have the carb level and it just doesn't look right. The clutch linkage is not level and the Trans tunnel will require modifications if I keep it like this.

What do you guys think???

Hey Dan
Here is a link to a drive line page and there are various links to differnt drive line guys on here . I'm not really sure the question you are asking, although if you are happy with the way the motor and tranny are sitting you can adjust your pinion angle accorrdingly. you'll just have to read some of these pages and figure how to measure it and decide where you are now and what it should be. I hope it helps.

from what I know, (and it ain't much!) the carb needs to be angled about 2-3* to the rear to keep the carb happy.

This gives some measurements Dan see if you can make any sense out of it !!
I think I understand yoyr question and if you can find measuring points this might be a decent guidline.

Found out that you have to use the stock angle. Otherwise you can't get the Yoke on the tranny.

Pictures latter...

Every factory Ford chassis shop manual has a very, very detailed section on drivetrain angles. The stuff is real simple.

If the tranny is a different length from stock you cannot maintain the same U-joint angles if the engine is mounted the same height vertically. The critical angle here is the engine/tranny angle identicle to factory.

Ford's horizontal reference angle for our trucks is the bottom flat part of the frame rails just forward of the front rear spring hangers.

Find the factory angle in your shop manual and duplicate it by adjusting the height of the tranny mount.

Use a VERY good bubble level or digital angle finder/protractor to take your measurements. DO NOT use the cheezy welding style floating needle plastic jobbers! They can be off 2-3 degrees which will ruin your day.

averagef250, you are correct. This is not as big a deal for me as I still have to weld the spring pertches on the rear end, so it's angle is not set.

The T-5 is almost the same length as the 3 speed I took out. T-5 is almost 1" longer.

I think I have it under control now.

Thanks for the help guys!

Glad it's going good! I like to use the factory angle so motor mounts bolt up easy and the fan shroud works.

I ended up using the Factory angle...5deg

I got the rear end All welded up...so now only a road test will tell if I got it right.

Thanks again for your help.
