67-69 hood letter removal ???

Post by kaptnkaos »

Hey all,

I picked up a pretty decent fairly rust free hood to replace the rusted out one on Olde Skool. What's the best way to remove the 67-69 hood letters without damage ??? The letters are in nearly mint condition, and I don't wanna damage them.

thank you,

If it is the same as my 71, you just unscrew the nut on the backside and LIGHTLY tap them out.

The actual letters on the front don't have a nut on the back I don't think.. the side hood markers do, but not the F O R D letters.... there are 2-3 pins on each letter, the slide into a bushing on the hood.

Tap the pins from the backside with a hammer or punch a little at a time on each pin so the come out even.

mrsnicks...

You are right the 67-69 hood letters do not have nuts like the later 70-72 have. They look like they have a cone shaped piece that fits over the pins on the inside of the hood. If I hammer then out, will I be able to reuse them ?
I parted out a '71 CS and it just had the half nuts with neoprene inserts like the side markers.

Thanks,

If there are cones/nuts/caps covering the pins gently remove them with pliers, either by twisting them or pulling on them. (not quite sure how they come out).

If you are careful and gentle, then yes, you can reuse them.

Here's a couple of photos. The blue one is factory and the red, a reasonable facsimile.

i used the same thing as you jor. i found my hood letters in the glove box so i went to o'reilly auto and bought two packs of the above clips and used them to secure the letters.

Hey Guys...

Thanks for your replies..
I got the letters of this evening with out any problem. They had the kind like in the blue photo. I tapped the loose with a brad hammer until I could get a small screwdriver blade under the letter a gently pryed them up some of the clips came out attached to the pins.

ezernut9mm.. you mentioned gwetting those clips at o'reilly auto parts.. I imgine that about any auto parts house would have them? I can't think of where there is an O'Reilly's around here.

thanks again...
