"Soft weld" wire for MIG??

Post by snake »

Sorry guys, I know I've seen this in a couple posts not all that long ago and I did do a search but came up empty .....

What is that special wire called for MIG welding patch panels that results in a softer weld that's easier to grind??

Thanks in advance!!!

Snake,
You might do a search over on metalmeet.com .... there's alot of info on that over there.
Good luck!

You want to use a 70S6 wire. It has a higher silicon content which makes it easier to work with. It flows better in the welding process and it is easier to grind.

Also you might want to try using a gas mix with a little oxygen in it. The Oxygen makes the arc a little hotter so you can use a higher travel speed and not heat soak the thin metal as much. I use a mix of 88% Argon, 10% CO2, and 2% Oxygen. Most gas companys don't have this exact mix but if you can find something with under 5% Oxygen you should be ok.
