Removal of Rear Brake drums on Floating Axle?

Post by cghstrojan08 »

I got a 82 f250 with I believe a DANA 60 rear end with a floating axle. How do I remove the rear drum? Do I have to remove the axle first or some bs like that? I am trying to replace the wheel cylinder. Thanks

1.

Raise the vehicle and install jackstands.
2.

Remove the wheel. Loosen the rear brake shoe adjustment.
3.

Remove the rear axle retaining bolts and lockwashers, axle shaft, and gasket.
4.

Remove the wheel bearing locknut, lockwasher, and adjusting nut.
5.

Remove the hub and drum assembly from the axle.
6.

Remove the brake drum-to-hub retaining screws, bolts or bolts and nut. Remove the brake drum from the hub.

Just before you pull the axle, place a drip pan under it to catch the stink.

NOT ALL D60 REARS REQUIRE YOU TO REMOVE THE AXEL TO PULL THE DRUM.

OR AM I MISTAKEN.

So, I don't have to remove the differential then? The axle will just slide out?

the diff dosen't have to come out, but what there saying is you may have to pull out the axel's, to get the drum off. some you don't, the drum might just slide off. the wheel studs, do they look like they come through the drum . or is there a plate in front of the drum that holds the studs. if you have that plate the axel has to come out. if not the axel can stay in.

Ok, thanks for the help. I am gonna take a look at it this weekend. Luckily though I asked a friend and his dad said he would fix the oil leak for free.
