Post by 69CSF250 »

I bought a fire truck the otherday and would like to know if anybody knows of a good way to remove the painted on lettering?

if iuts vinal a hair dryer and a carpet knife blade. Heat iot up by waving the dryer on low or medium and try peeling it back by hand if it won't come try uising the knife to cut the glue.

If paint then a water soaked 000(tripple ouight) steel wool might just ontop of the lettering.

They also make a rubber attachment for your drill, that will remove vinyl lettering. It's about a 6" round, rubber circle, with a post in the middle for you to attach to your drill.

You run it and use the beveled outside edge to remove the vinyl stickers.

I don't know if it has a "proper" name. We had one at a place I worked.

I have used Easy Off oven cleaner a few times and it works pretty good. You'll need a lot of elbow greese too! :o Nice truck BTW!

Thanks for the info the lettering appears to be clearcoted not sure though and I think I will try the easy off oven cleaner will this damage the paint around or under the lettering? I suppose I would do this very sparingly and rinse well after each application? if that works would then wash and wax the affected area? If you cannot tell I am very nervous about messing up the paint job it looks remarkably good for as old as it is... I will post more pictures soon... I very much appreciate the help!!!

If its not clear coated should I assume that it is clearcoated under the painted on lettering I would think that it is most likely? Thank god for this site! ON a side note anyone have any idea what the tank and pump with 200feet of hose would be worth I don't plan on keeping that stuff? Thanks guys!!!

Find a Volunteer dept donate the pump and hose and reel and ask for a receipt for the items and use as a tax deduction .

I had to remove some DOT numbers on the '67dump. I didn't care about the paint and went at it with Easy Off and a Scotch Brite pad. You can barely tell it got scratched! My point is, the paint on the body is pretty darn durable. The oven cleaner takes the lettering off pretty well and doesn't effect the paint. One thing to note, you may still be able to see were the letters were after all the paint is removed. If the truck was stored indoors, which it looks like it has, there probably wasn't much fadding, but old paint jobs show where the lettering used to be.

Thanks for the info as soon as the weather breaks and I get some time I think I am going to work on removing the letters... My dad thinks I should keep all that on the truck but It just does'nt feel like my truck with someone else's writing on it... Good idea about donating the pump and tank too. I will let you all know how it goes thanks again...
