Factory Under-Tailgate Filler Panel???

Post by Mooosman »

Hi guys,

I decided to do a little overhaul of my 72 Custom last weekend, removing the add-on hitch and dealer-installed bumper at the back of the truck, and the huge contracters toolbox in the bed.

I haven't decided if I want to leave the bumper off, get the chrome factory Sport bumper, or restore the original dealer-installed step bumper.

What I want to know is: I know the lower trim levels didn't get a factory rear bumper, but was there a factory filler/valance panel option for our trucks, say, if a customer didn't want a rear bumper?

Failing that, are there any aftermarket companies that make a valance panel for the rear of our trucks?

Thanks
Nick

P.S. Amazingly, when I removed the dealer installed bumper, I bolted the license plate up to the factory bracket under the driver's side, and hooked up the factory license light.

Surprise! The bulb came on! After 35 years of non-use, the elements, and vibration, the factory license bulb works!

I bought the roll pan from them for my truck and it is a nice piece. Can't wait to get it welded in. THat is the only downfall of the piece is it is a weld in one. I'm sure you could make it a bolt in, but tabs would have to be made on the sides to mount it.

I asked a similar Q awhile back cause I'm going to install a chrome sport bumper on my '70.......and it just looked like there needed to be some kind of filler panel there. Most replies said nope,no filler piece required.OF course you'll need one if ya go bumperless---sweet look IMO
