Painting doors

Post by averagef250 »

How did the factory paint the doors and door hinges? From looking at pretty original trucks, the hinges are body color and the bolt heads are painted. Did they paint the doors after they were hung on the truck?

Exactly. That's how I painted my truck, bare cab, bare doors. I just aligned the doors and painted inside out and everythign with the doors open.

Mine is red on white. Looks like they did it with the doors open. The factory "tape" job for adding the white leaves something to be desired. It ends inside the door jams and just inside where the cab and box meet.

I'm wrapping up a nut and bolt resto of a bumpside and I was really hoping to duplicate a factory paintjob. I decided painting the doors on the truck left alot to be desired so I painted it seperate. The bolt heads won't be painted, but atleast there won't be any missed spots.

you could always put the bolts in a piece of cardboard and paint them before you install them.

Been there done that you still get flaking of the paint from using your tools to tighten the bolts or nuts.

That's never worked for me either. Seams the bare bolt heads look better than flaking painted ones.

maybe put a cloth over the bolt and then put the socket on it.

A little paint in a jar & a small brush might fix the flaked bolts well enuff.

Or maybe even just leave the bolts unpainted, install the doors, then use the brush on the heads of the bolts after the door are hung.

Or a real good tape off and matching or even black spray on paint? After installed.

...or just replace the factory bolts with stainless versions.

I painted mine while they were off and I after I wrestled them back on and adjusted the *&%^ out of them I will need a bit of touch-up here and there. If I had the option again and didn't have to take them off I wouldn't.
Something else to keep in mind (the on body weatherstrips) I thought I had the doors just where I needed them until I glued on the new weatherstrips. I had to re adjust again. I don't know about your trucks but I had what seemed like a lot of trouble getting my doors aligned again after removal.

A little tip I learned if you are going to remove your doors. Drill a 1/8 inch hole through the hinge strap and the inner door skin. Be careful you don't through to the outside of the door. Then remove the door. When you put it back on, stick a loose drill bit in the holes you've drilled and the door will be aligned back in its original position. Paint after the door is back in place. Works good for hood hinges too.
