Trailer Hitch

Post by capeclassics »

Is there such a thing as a stock or aftermarket trailer hitch set-up that bolts to the frame of my '70 LWB??I'm switching the current step bumper for a chrome bumper.
If so,where can I get one?

What kind of trailer will you be towing? Yes, there were factory trailer hitches, but not the receiver hitches that are popular now....those didn't come along until a little later. Ford did offer a trailer hitch with the chrome sport bumper. I've got a couple of these setups from parts trucks. They'd be fine for light towing of a small utility trailer, but back then if you were planning on doing heavy towing, you used the step bumper. Here's a shot of one of mine:

As for the aftermarket, there are plenty to choose from, of the bolt-on receiver hitch variety and which will allow you to tow much greater loads.

Just hopped up on E-bay to browse for a few minutes and ran across one of these....and believe it or not, I think it's the first one I've ever seen listed here. What are the chances?

Hidden Hitch here. Mounted under my stepside it's barley noticeable.

Yes, the frame-rail spacing is the same...it'll be a direct bolt-on. You already have the sport-style rear bumper, right? Does yours have a hole mounted dead center along the bottom ridge, directly underneath the license plate? You'll need one there to bolt it up.

Hitches are what i do. There are several availble draw tite, hidden hitch, curt and others. Any hitch for our trucks will require drilling 6 to 8 half inch holes. You should beable to pickone up at any place that sales hitches for 120 to 150 roughly.
a couple of part numbers
drawtite 40050
41001
75034
curt 13099
valley 81190
73000

Arrrrggg! Hey Keith,I finally got out and checked the rear chrome bumper that I plan to install. It doesn't have a hole dead center to bolt the hitch to.Also, the bumper is straight across unlike the one in your pic????I guess I'll have to go with one of the others recommended in this thread. Thanks to all who replied.

Sorry, almost forgot.

Mine is a 75034.

Go to http://www.draw-tite.com/ and put 75034 in the search box.
