What keith said. Basically, it's faster to say "wow, that's a good looking highboy" than "wow, that's a good looking 197* F-250 4x4". The term is made up, it means nothing, but is overused to describe just about everything but a 2wd ford. There was never any factory lift option for F-100's or F-250's. The only differences were heavier GVW packages that made, atleast the F-250 4x4, sit a tiny bit higher in the front because of an extra leaf.

You sure about the never lifted by ford part ?? Mine has blocks under the rear springs, now I haven't owned this truck very long and don't know if they were installed by PO. I had thought the lift was factory

The blocks are a stock part that was in there since the production of of your truck. The highboys(67-77.5) come with a 4in and the (77.5-79) Lowboys come with a 3in block both are intended to give the trucks their proper stance and even have the bumpstop bracket molded into them. I'm sure if you look at it as a Block in the rear is =to a lift kit,then thats a way to look at it because it's not using straight springs for its stance. But thats how ford engineered them for their stock 4wd F250's and wasn't concidered a 4x4 (special lift)package.

yea, the blocks in the rear were factory. if it has a divorced t-case and is older than 1977.5 it is a highboy. yours could have another spring or two in the front to level it out.

Ive never seen a non Highboy then all of the F250 4x4's that I have seen have a 4in block in the rear?

The 7700 GVW F-250 4x4's did not sit any higher in the rear than the standard 6800 trucks. The 7700 GVW trucks had an additional 1" block in the rear, but it is ON TOP of the spring pack to space the overload spring properly. If the 7700 GVW trucks were the only ones to be "highboy's" you wouldn't see too many of them. The 7700 bumpsides are pretty rare. I would guess 1 in 10. They do sit higher in the front, but not much at all and after 35 years or so all these old trucks sit differently from how they've been treated.

I've never seen a '67-'77.5 f250 4x4 that was'nt a highboy, though not a factory term "highboy" is a slang term specific to the f250...... f100's f150's and f350's were not highboys, if i'm not mistaken the f350 was'nt availabe as a 4x4 until '78, the '77.5-'79 f250 4x4's are all "lowboys".......if it's got a divorced t-case (married on a lowboy), 4" blocks in the rear (3"on a lowboy), positive arched springs up front (negative on a lowboy), 27" frame spacing (34" on a lowboy), 2 1/2" wide springs in the rear (3" on a lowboy), low pinion diff up front (high pinion on a lowboy). then it's a highboy, at least those are the facts as i know them, but let the debate rage on......

That's the way I understand it. '79 was the only year for a dentside F-350 4x4.

I've seen highboys that sit pretty low. I had a '69 F-250 4x4 with 38K original miles on it recently. Even with so few miles it barely sat any higher than my 2wd F-100. It was a farm truck it's whole life and the springs were all beat. It had the 4" blocks in the rear just like every other F-250 4x4 made prior to 77.5.

then why have i taken out the 3" blocks on a 72 f250 4x4 frame and replaced them with the 4" ones from a 67 ?

It must be so cold up there they shrunk and your tape mesure was warm Did the 3in tall block you removed have the bumpstop provision on it? And they were 2.25in wide?

I was removing parts from several dentsides a week ago, a '77 F150 and a '77 F250, both 4x4s. The F150 had 3" blocks and the F250 had 4" blocks. The '79 F350 4x4 also there had 3" blocks. Here are some pictures I took:
