Found out today that the distributors are different in the FT 361 vs a 360 FE truck motor. Did a valve cover gasket, spark plug and wire swap on my friends F600 wrecker and rolled the motor over by the starter to check the rockers for oil flow and the jacobs coil shot a nice 1" arc from the post to the negative lug on the coil and burned out the ignition module on the mallory distributor. Went downhill from there because I didn't realize what happened until it was back together. Then while troubleshooting it I noticed the rotor button in the cap was missing and the cap was burned away so I spent $33 on a cap and rotor on a burned up ignition. Buddy stopped over and we decided to write off the Mallory and go get a 360 distributor, but the oil pump drive shaft on the FT was 5/16 or 3/8 and the FE was 1/4" so that didn't work. The module is $70 and should be in tomorow afternoon. I did manage to fab up some fuel lne to put the cab tank back in sevice and made a new accelerator rod so the throttle plates will open completely. Ohh the agony...
If you want, a GM HEI module will work. 2 spade connectors to the
pickup/trigger a power and a coil trigger. Screw it down to a heat sink.
Like aluminum plate.
The FT crank is forged steel vs. cast iron for the FE and the snout is much larger in diameter so FE damper doesn't fit and the FT damper has a counter weight on it.
The FT mounts on the front of the engine so the timing cover is a big ol' cast bucket that bolts to the cross member. The block is sometimes drilled and tapped for FE-style side mounts, but usually not. (If it isn't, it's definitely an FT block.) The bellhousing or transmission will have two angled flanges for mounting the rear of the engine to the sides of the frame.
The distributor has a bigger tail shaft and larger drive shaft so a FT block has to bushed to use a FE distributor. The FT oil pump has a bigger drive socket as well. The distributors with governors look like someone put a briggs and stratton on them.
The FT pan is 8 or 9 quart rear sump so it is almost level front to back but makes an excellent pan for a built FE in a lifted 4X4.
FT pistons may be as low as 7:1 compression.
FT heads have bigger combustion chambers to lower compression.
FT intake has a water crossover that is routed differently and the exhaust manifolds are slightly different from FE but I don't remember how.
Some FTs have some kind of exterior oil line coming out the side of the block.
The good part about the 391 is that the block could be thicker at the cylinders and has a better chance of being able to be bored out to 4.13 to make a 428. Also the forged steel crank is stronger and can be modified to fit the FE and be very much like the 427 forged steel cranks, but the machine work necessary will be very expensive.

hey Dustin, you should buy my 330 FT! give ya something to do!
In life many men take the path of righteousness, some take the path many others follow (G.M. owners, for example), some take a more arduous path, some a simpler path. I, sir, took the PSYCO-PATH!!
That's what our Poor Mans 427 block was. A 330 LOL. Now its living large LOL.

The FT also has a different water pump and front cover. The exhaust manifolds will not interchange between the FT & FE. The heads usually use sodium filled exhaust valves and the diameter fo the valves are smaller on the FT.Most heavy duty(FT) blocks have a mirror image 105 on the left front of the block and have extra webbing in the main saddles. And the carbs usually have a governor on them.

LOL, dont worry. I thought that the only differenc between the two was the crank and the heavier duty block of the FT. But hey thats why I love this site. I have learned masses of info from my fellow members.
