Tri Sodium Phosphate to remove anodize

Post by dablack00 »

I haven't tried it yet and I probably won't get to for a while. I use the stuff to clean engine parts as it is great for removing grease and oil. From what I under stand TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) is great for removing anodize from Al. The thing is, you have to bring the solution to a boil. Put a little in water, submerge the part you want to strip and let boil for 10 minutes. I have not tried this. I don't know how safe it is and I don't know what the mixing instructions are. I just wanted to put it out there so if someone wanted to try it, they could.

Hello Dablack00

You can also try lye based oven cleaner to take anodize off aluminum. That is what fordification says to do and they also give a step by step on the whole prosess. I have a 69 Grille I will be polishing so I might use the Oven Cleaner on an non obvious spot first.

I'm well versed on most of the options to take the anodize off. I just wanted to add yet another option that I had recently heard about. I haven't tried any of them yet. I have some old headlight surounds that I will try to polish up eventually. So far lye does seem like its the best option. Make a big tube of it and dip the grill. If you have a 55 gallon drum, you could do one end at a time.
