What's the best product for rust prevention?

Post by RandyBee1 »

I'm in the process of restoring my F100. Its pretty rust free so I want to be pro active in keeping it that way. I've already used Por 15 on the engine compartment, the entire frame and the underside of the bed with the bed removed of course!.
The thing that concerns me about Por-15 is that everyone says its the greatest stuff in the world but no one has ever said something like " I used it 20 years ago and my truck is still rust free" With that in mind I decided on a small experiment. I finished the understide of the truck bed, the wheel wells and way up into the inards with Eastwoods Rust Encapsulator. I plan to use Rust Bullet on the top of the bed as well as some small sections of the truck that I did not hit with Por 15. Hopefully, in 5 years or so I'll know for sure which is best. I live in the rust belt of north east Maryland so it might be sooner that that!

How about it, Has anyone used a rust product on their truck 10 years ago and is it still rust free? If so, what did you use?
I have a '74 E200 that's next and I want to use what's best.

The best thing as far as the inner doors, inner fenders, and every thing elese you cant see is 3M's Rust Fighter. It's clear/amber and never dries out. It's not cosmetic like undercoat and is impossible the remove from your hands. Water and salt cannot penetrate this stuff.

-And dont even consider driving it on the roads after the first salting in the fall, and until the rains have washed away ALL the salty sand off the roads in the spring. :D

Hey Randybee1, I'll be removing my bed and flipping it to do the same thing in a few months...How did you get the marine clean, metal ready, and por 15 up into the wheel wells? I'm trying to do the same as you and keep the little bit of rest at bay and only want to do it once.

Thanks

Tom

Tom, I stood the bed on end so that when I rinsed the Marine Clean and Metal Ready off with water it would all drain down and off the bed instead of into the seams. I couldn't get into the upper wheel well areas so I used Rust Encapsulator from Eastwood. I bought the spray can and shot it up as far as I could. The good thing about the Metal Ready and Marine Clean is that because its in a spray bottle I was able to spray the stuff pretty far up into the wheel wells to properly prep the metal. Good Luck.. the big difference in por15 and eastwoods rust encapulator is por 15 does not do well in the UV rays so you must cover the por or seal it with something personally I like the eastwoods stuff they have an article about the test on the por and there product check it out mine was blasted (was pretty rusty then metal prep then rust encapsulator the bottom then was sprayed with the bed liner by SEM's bed liner kit and I was able to get in all the areas I think the key thing is enought is never enought so go very heavy on everything as you well know we want to protect the areas where the body seams come together and are the first to go, eastwood also has a product called ANTI RUST which someone mention something like it on an earlier post kinda clear amber stuff stays semi soft very water proof and dont wear off

While it's not exactly rust prevention Bondo makes a product called One Step. It's a rust converter that is applied to rusty metal to stop the rust and re-convert it back into paintable condition. I've used it extensively and have been very pleased with it.
