How do you know if your truck is supposed to be two-tone?

Post by atmobeach »

Just joined tonight-we just purchased a 1968 Ranger-Styleside.

The identification numbers tell us the paint was chrome yellow.

How do we know if the original paint was two-tone/ deluxe or a combination? Right now it is painted white on the roof and below the body molding and a reddish colour down the middle.
But we are not sure if this truck was supposed to be this way.

Is it the trim around the tailgate that tells you?
I have read members talk about the trim around the windshield also?

We would really like to knwo how this truck was originally painted.

Thanks in advance for any help.

If the paint was an original two-tone, there would be two numbers in the paint code on the truck's VIN tag. If there's only one number, then it was all one color. The trim isn't necessarily indicative of a two-tone, as that could have been optioned by the original buyer.

On the other hand, a truck WITHOUT trim couldn't have been a two-tone, as the trim was used to cover the lines where the two different colors met.

What does your truck's VIN tag have for the color code(s)?

The color code will tell you if it was a two-tone, there will be two paint codes. It doesn't tell you what kind of two-tone though.

Easy way to tell, the regular two-tone with the accent color on the roof will have the belt line molding around the back of the cab. A deluxe two-tone with the accent color below the bumpside will have the body side molding. A combination two-tone with the accent color on the roof and below the bumpside will have both the cab and side molding.

if the truck has been repainted. you can sometimes tell by looking in the door jambs and behind the trim. or under the window gaskets. but your data plate should have two paint codes if it were a real two tone truck. i don't think that the way yours is painted it is considered two tone. the two tone would more than likely split at the beltline trim or on the bump side. but someone else may have a different more knowledgeable opinon than me.

Mine is painted in the same color scheme, although it is tan in the middle, not reddish brown. Looking at the places where the paint has chipped or faded I can tell that the roof and lower body being white is how it came from the factory. The upper body used to be green, though.
It has the side body moulding and the beltline trim under the back window.
I believe it's reffered to as a deluxe two-tone paint scheme.
