Aircraft/plane stripper
I've been told by a few DIY body work guys that aircraft/plane stripper is good for removing paint and getting down to bare metal. They say to paint it on, let it sit and then scrape the paint away. Has anyone heard or used this before? Is it recommended and could it really be that easy? Thanks in advance.

Brake cleaner and a power washer would work pretty well, too! ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_laughing01.gif)

I used regular paint stripper from the hardware store last time I stripped a rig for painting. Was just that easy, but the fumes can kill you! Don't do this in the winter with the garage doors closed. (don't ask me how I know!) ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_laughing01.gif)

Yes, it does work....but man does it create a mess....and fumes....and the possibility of leftover residue attacking the paint if you don't get it almost microscopically cleaned off afterwards.
Just chuck up a 3M composite stripping wheel in an angle grinder and go to work. It'll strip things down to bare metal in almost no time, and the only cleanup you have is to sweep up the dust.

re: Aircraft/plane stripper
Klean Strip makes the "Aircraft" brand.
There is a LOW ODOR version that will not burn your eye's out and is less runny, and stronger. It was made for shops that dont have a good vent system. You must buy NITRILE stripping gloves and never use rubber or latex when working with this stuff. The best way to apply is clean the area with 100 grit sand paper and use a paint brush to apply a thin coat.
Here's a tip. Once you brush it on leave it. Don't over lap your stokes. If you look carfully after making on pass with a brush you'll notice the surface developes a waxy looking film. This wax film holds the solvents, so continuous brushing breaks the wax and weakens the stripper. Oh, and dont waste time using the spray can version.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

I used Crest Chemical Stripper on support equipment in the corps. You could watch the paint bubble up and wipe it off with your gloved hand. But it can give you one hell of a burn so use it carefully and use a mask and face shield and plenty of ventilation.

It works great on something that washing it down with laquer thinner is no problem on. DOn't get it around rubbers or lights or crevaces if your not tearing it completely apart. THis stuff will hide and ruin a new paint job. Works great on hoods and stuff that has flat surfaces to were using a stripping wheel might cause heat and pressure while leaning on the hood. Just wear gloves and try to get in a ventilated area.

re: Aircraft/plane stripper
Aircraft stripper does work.
But these guys are right it makes a big mess and if you get any on you it will remove skin with equal efficiency.
Also if there is any body work under the paint you will have to strip and re-do the body work as well. I am assuming if you are taking it to metal you are going to do that anyway but if not better use a stripping wheel carefully...
