What is the best paint to spray at home

Post by dablack00 »

I'm going to be painting my truck at home. It doesn't have to be perfect, but I would like it if it is at least ok. I have a resporator, but I don't have a suit. I was hoping to spray a type of paint where I don't have to wear a suit and I can use my resporator.

thanks

I shoot all kinds of paint in my garage, and my dad did the same for many years and we never wear any suits. A good quality respirator is a must though, and make sure the filters stay clean and don't get clogged. I personally think the suit is just to keep dust and crap from your clothes and hair from touching the paint as it lays down. Just blow yourself off real good with the air hose before starting. We use PPG and Dupont base coat/clear coat systems. I have ordered some single stage copper metallic off of Ebay to shoot a friends motorcycle, but I have not used the brand before so won't recommend it yet. Just make sure all of your paint components are compatible with each other, the best thing is to stay with the same brands.

If it is your first truck to simplify things depending on color go with a single stage Urethane product. Valspar, Dupont, or any of the other reputable brands. It is much easier than having to spray your 2-3 coats of base and then coming back with a couple coats of clear. More chance of runs and mistakes with more coats. Just my .02.

I was thinking about some PPG Omni Acrylic Enamel. I think that sould work out ok. I have read if you use the hardener, it will cut and buff real nice.

Any comments?

thanks

We use to use that a few years ago, but most people have gotten away from acrylic enamel. PPG is good paint. Good luck with it and let us know how it turns out.

Why is a Urethane better than an Enamel?

Normally urethane is better for fiberglass due to its ability to expand and contract with the fiberglass in hot and cold weather. It is a more durable and if you want to sayt flexible paint. Enamel is hard and is more prone to crack under those conditions.
