I just drove my 1972 F250 around a bit.
Transmission slips a little, just got the engine running yesterday.
The truck has languished idle and broken for five years in East Pierce County, original complaint:
"carb backfired, started a fire on the engine that melted the wiring harness."

This truck is in very good shape, I'm a Happy Camper.

The VIN issue cost me time & energy plus some extra change.
First thought it was a 390.
Fram spec pages at an auto parts store state: Ford fifth digit = engine
(same as GM) so no correlation to an "R" in 72 (except HO 351 4V in Mustang) All I want is filters, especially after a five year hiatus from activity.
Shucks Auto flat states: "No way we can ID engines from VIN".

Main branch library in downtown has a '74 factory manual that helped,
but on a limited basis & it's a ways away (plus I detest urban logic-free zones) I've been mainly a Chevrolet kinda guy for decades, but this particular truck is solid and highly functional, while lookin' good to boot.

Actually, the 4th digit is the engine type. If it's a 390, it should be an H code. You can deciphor the VIN and door plates from the link on the home page here.

Ford Trucks used the 4th digit in the VIN for engine ID, Ford cars used the 5th digit.

Avoid Schucks, and shop at NAPA (or online, much better prices can be found on a lot of things!)

Welcome to the site, I'm not to far awy from you (Shelton) but it looks like the only way to get there is from the east side of the pond.

Welcome! Been a few years since I was on Anderson Island. Did some squid jiggin' in January off the dock about ten years ago. Colder than a well diggers shovel but got a mess of 'em.
Most of these old trucks have had the motors yanked once or twice so the vin is just a blueprint to what was. You have come to the right place if you have questions!
