If you aren't repainting the entire hood you will have to sand it down to bare metal where the rust is, and put a good primer on it... after the primer is on you will have to feather-edge the edges where the primer meet the paint so it flows into each other without leaving a visible edge.

The hardest part is going to be matching the paint.. especially if it is older and/or faded.

maaco isnt bad, people get the wrong impression of maaco. they spray well, but they dont prep at all hardly. if you prep your truck, FULLY, and let them spray it, it will last quite a while. I would (if your getting a full job done) go with a 2 stage paint, not a single stage. Mine will end up single stage when the body is done for the fact that I dont want two stage until I get EVERYTHING done.

layedout is right if you do all the prep including taking off all trim and grill and bumpers handles and locks the do a pretty good job but dont let them tape over trim or crome.....seen some bad over spray come out of them shops. but they use the same paint as any other shop...(2stage that is) single stage isnt the best. so prep first then let them spray and you would be supprised. they used to do reall crappy work but they lost so much business that they had to step it up a notch or two.

My experience w Maaco was I got an est. of $250 to spray out the cab AFTER I did all the prep sanding and disconnecting, etc. When I went back to have them do it the price had gone up to $450!

I heard there are places in los angeles where you can rent a spray both for about $60/hr, prep and paint it youself. I am thinking about doing that...

I bet you can find a shop willing to do that anywhere. Painting truly isnt a HARD thing to do. You just need to know the basics of every step.Things happen of course, fisheyes, crackling, runs, and all that, but for the most part you can get it back home, fix it, and bring it back for another shot with clear. Its not as hard as some think.

Any good NAPA or other paint supplier should be able to color match that, spraying it you could do yourself or have someone do.

How are the basic laws about spraying? As in if i built a booth at home and got the paint and compressor and a permit if required?

if you want to do a good job, home spray is not a good idea. either rent a professional booth or let professional do it. otherwise you are just losing more value of the truck for a lot work.

You have done alot of cleaning up of that truck if memory serves. You CAN touch up that hood nicely and not have to do a whole expensive paintjob now and will look good.
Figure out who will provide you with some color-match paint. That technology is great now. Then just wetsand the suface rust, dust in some primer of choice (epoxy?self etch?), tape off the panel to the crease on the hood and spray away!

Hey I too have a loonie size rust spot that I have sanded down to the metal. I have the correct touch up paint too. So I should tape off the area to be painted, how far beyond do I prime and paint?
If I tape off say a 5 inch square won't it really stand out. I have never attempted any repair like this before. Should I fill in the area with rust inhibiter? can you buy just a small amount?

Let me know what you guys think
thanks
