F250 disk brake conversion

Post by snake »

Is an F250 disk brake conversion pretty much the same as the F100 disk brake conversion?? I realize some '69-'72 F250s have factory disk brakes but I'd assume finding spindles from those years could be hard to find. So will the '73-'79 F250 sindles bolt on etc similarly as the F100 conversions do??

Also, are the F250 steering boxes different than F100 steering boxes??

Thanks for the help!

Yes, the disc brake swap would be the same. It would be adviseable to just find a disc-brake-equipped truck and swap the whole front end under it.

The power steering box is the same for F100 and F250.

Be aware that if you do so, 16" wheels may not fit. I bought my '70 f250 that had been converted with dual piston one-ton brakes. It had some rusty chrome steel 16.5 wheels on it, and I bought new AR 16" aluminium wheels for it, which did not work- they hit the calipers. I went to 17" and all is fine.

Never thought of that I'd like to swap to 16" rims eventually I'll have to check that, hopefully those dual piston's from a 1-ton were the problem and the stock F250 brakes will allow a 16" rim.

Yes- be careful! I'd not read anything about this issue here or on that other forum. The wheels went right on, and it was not until we tightened them down that the problem was apparent. Lucky for me, the tire place took the rims back, as all four had been mounted and balanced, but I ended up buying the high-$ 17 rims and tires from them anyway.

I was eyeballing the tech article on disc brake conversion here, and am wondering, would it be better to buy all the parts new, or are used up to snuff (assuming you inspect them first, I don't mean just taking any rusty pile O junk you find). Just wondering if there is that great of a difference-I'm sure all new parts would probably cost at least 2-3 times more.

Let us know if you find a place to get NOS spindles. I think all the other parts are available.
