You may be seeing condensation out the exhaust.

yes it could be unburnt water vapor from the gas they make now days. how much are you getting? is it just a few drips or does the exhaust color look white like its steam?

so after about 2 minutes running it the ground behind the pipes is spattered with drips of water that fly out... looks like a drip every second. there is no steam.

That sounds like condensation.

i wonder if the silicon bead i put around the water ports on the intake gasket was compromised causing a small amount of water into the combustion chamber. That would explain why i can rev it hard but not moderately or normally.

Water is not your problem. Stick to the basics. You already know that there are issues with the advance plate in the distributor. What have you got the timing set at now? Vacuum advance hooked up or not?

Try backing it to 6-8 degrees. If you get too much advance before vacuum then when vaccuum hits it'll kill ya.

also is the dizz single or dual port? if single your line from the carb has only one place to go, if dual then your carb vaccuum hose goes on the front of the advance and intake to the rear.

most opt for single dizz's as todays gas maes the retard half of a dual port advance mechanism redundant.

also most caps on the dizz seem to have .5-1 degree of movement in either direction when clipped down try twisting a little while its still clapped in place see what that does. hell could even be two plugs hooked backwords on the dizz. like 3 and 6 or what not.

302 oughta be 15426378 firing order.

thanks for the reply Rjewkes. I did back it to 8 deg. but i reallly haven't had a chance to test it though. It's a single port dist.

Np hope you get it square before you go bonkers. also could be a stuck weight in the distributor itself made worse with vac advance kickin' in.

Does a stuck weight cause a delay in advance? Im having similar issues with mine and have noticed a slight delay in the advance when checking with a timing light. The advance comes on, but there is an initial delay when the motor revs up. Just throwing that out as a symptom. Timing set at 10 degrees initial and 36 total around.

soooo... started it up again tonight, ran horribly (very inconsistent)without the vacuum line attached. Found after removing the carb and taking the top off that there were some aluminum shavings in the second float needle filter... here's what the piece looks like http://www.flickr.com/photos/14271123@N ... 404993589/. I'm hoping this was my problem, however, there was no aluminum in the float needle area.

So, I just changed that stupid straight line to the banjo recently, i wonder if some aluminum came off the threads and got inside. There's a lot of flashing on these carbs... i don't think the quality is what it used to be.
