There's no set answer for that one. If your steering is loose, you'll know it. The truck will wander, especially when you hit a bump, and you'll have excessive steering wheel travel before the truck starts to turn. I can't really tell you what 'excessive' is, but basically I'd think if you can turn the wheel more than about 10-15 degrees before the linkage starts to move, than you probably need to start checking things out, starting with the steering linkage and rag joint.
If you asked the question, that means you're probably experiencing some of these symptoms. Can you tell us what your truck's doing?

Man that is one wore out tie rod end. Good find before something bad happened.
1969 Ford F-100. 302 4 barrel, C4 auto, 9in 3.50 open rear, headers, power steering, Turq/wht, Under restoration. In other words, in a million pieces!!!

I bought a 78 F150 about ten years ago. Drove it to work and then at lunch headed over to the local auto supply to buy a new draglink. Got about halfway there when a bad feeling kind of hit me. Turned around
and went back. Got under that truck and gave a light tug on the link- darn joint fell right apart in my hand
