If you're going to be a while between primer and top coat you should seal it with something like a clear coat or some other type of sealer. Primer is very porous and it will start rusting back through pretty quickly. I had no issues with what I've done. Took it down to bare metal, sanded with 100 grit, sprayed a coat of the 2K urethane primer, sanded with 150 grit, sprayed another coat, sanded with 250 grit, sprayed the Eastwood high build primer, sanded with 400 grit and then sprayed 2 coats of the Southern Polyurethane 2K white epoxy sealer. The finish is smooth and rock hard. I went up and sat with the guys at Southern Polyurethanes for an hour. I'll be using their coating for my final color so I wanted their recommendation. I let them know that I was going to primer and seal and it would be close to a year before I'd be top coating color. They recommended that white sealer. That was 6-8 months ago and still shows no sign of bleed through rust. Hopefully I'll be spraying color next month. I also trust BobbyFord's recommendations. I just met with those other guys first.
Not sure if I want to invest another $90 just to ensure better adhesion over a few bare metal spots. You said yu used the 2K urethane prime on ALL bare metal and didn't have a problem? I think I'll just follow your lead. My paint job was pushed up up by request from the wife so I won't be waiting until 2014 - no sealer :) I plan building up the primer base with the 2K uretahan surfacer follwed by paint - is that acceptable? What is the the advantage of need for the Eastwood high build? Will I be okay to skip it?

Thanks again, sorry I have so many questions.

I've had no issues and since you're going to be top coating soon after I don't think you will either. Just make sure you get it clean and oil/wax/dirt free. Basically, I used the high build to cover up my lousy body filler work. After 2 coats of primer, I still had some visible scratch marks and tiny holes from air bubbles in my filler. A good heavy coat of the Featherfill covered up all my sins nicely and sanded down smooth and pretty. Good luck and post up some pics when you get done.

Just for a note we were out today & seen a '97-'04 F series pickup. It had a chunk of paint missing on the cab & shining through was grey primer.

We all have our sins to cover up. I'm no body man and have come to accept a certain amount of imperfections. Thanks for the reminder - I'm always forgetting to take pictures of my work and I should go out right now and take a before primer picture.

If you just want some primer most your auto parts place sell primer and reducer some of the hubs even mix paint for you. I was just out in the shop and looked in my paint cabinet ( had to do paint inventor ) I have duplicolor grey primer and reducer sand able I've been using it I bought it at autozone I also have grey and red primer from orielly's I use the duplicolor more than the other one if your just covering up and leveling out their reasonable on price and you go down and get it easier than going to a painting supply store which my is about 15 miles away autozone 1 mile orielly's 2 mile.

I did just that - went out and found the grey Duplicolor I figured that would be good as a first coat over the bare metal spots. After that, I'll use the 2K urethane primer surfacer before I take it in for paint. I just finished taping it up sO it's getting close to showtime :D I'm waiting for some seal sealer to arive before I finish up the sanding around the seams.

sargentrs wrote:Eastwood has high quality coatings but they are pricey. For basic primer purposes, I got Summit Racing's http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-up220 , activator http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-up101 and reducer http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rll-248877 for thinning and absolutely necessary for clean up. For a high build top coat, I went with Eastwood's http://www.eastwood.com/featherfill-g2-gray-quart.html It comes with activator and used the Summit reducer for clean up. For a final sealer coat, I went with the people that are going to be supplying my color, Southern Polyurethane's white 2K sealer.
Barry at SPI is great isn't he ? - what color - their red ? - that is what I think mine will be - I used their epoxy for everything and their under-seal for the chassis.
Their epoxies and clears cannot be beaten - and that red is oh so red !!!
thanks

Sprayed the self etching primer from auto parts store over the bare metal last night. It's didn't spray as smooth as I would have liked but it's on there. I'll sand it down tonight to smoothe things over and move on to the 2X Polyuerahne in the AM. I'm hoping that the next coats go on a bit better. I don't have a pressure gage on my gun so I don't think I was getting enough pressure to create a fine mist of primer. Once I turned up the pressure at the compressor the spray pattern improved.
