8 HMMWV tires for free! what a christmas

Re: 8 HMMWV tires for free! what a christmas
There is also a "body lift" kit. This raises the body above the frame. You replace the body bushings with taller bushings. This does not offer more ground clearance, only fender well clearance over the tires. I've never done it, but kits are available.
I'm not saying this is the correct kit for you, it's just an example.

Just my opinion, but I would stick with your current tires if you were going to resort to a body lift. To me, they look stupid. Your frame is more visible, and your bumpers will be 3" lower than the body being a dead give away you threw a body lift on. You also have to realize you may need to screw with the shifters, steering column, clutch rod, etc. being that the body is now higher. It is an option though and you can move your bumpers up with new brackets, and fix any clearance issues with before mentioned things.

I'm not sure what I would do if I was going to build an off-road basher. A high center of gravity is not a good thing unless you like tipping over.

exactly, that's why I would do the minimum that would get the tires to tuck and not rub. Which would most likely be a simple 2" leveling spring up front . Or extra leaves.

Check the offset on those 16.5's there.
Chevy IFS (hummer) wheels have much more positive offset than solid axle rig wheels do. Odds are your tires will sit in really far with those wheels and look pretty rediculous. The highboy running them on the last page clearly has different wheels.

got some pics. my camera batteries died after taking the 2 before pictures so the rest are cell phone shots. the tires rub badly on the front shocks and draglink. i'll be selling all 8 for money to get some 33" all terrains. on the way back from the test drive the bad wheel bearings and trunnion bearings finally failed and the front brake locked up. i had to use the engine muscle to drag it back into the driveway

Should be easy to sell. Cash is always good too.

I saw. Looks like a stiff wind can tip it over like that. Nice wheels, too bad they don't fit.

The funny part about those wheels/tires is the offset will only work on IFS trucks or little vehicles with full width axles. You need a ton of lift on an IFS chevy to fit those tires on one. IFS chevies look pretty rediculous with any lift at all (the front suspension and torsion bars hang down a mile).
So you've got wheels that don't really work for anything but a hummer.

Re: 8 HMMWV tires for free! what a christmas
got to test them out in 2 ways today.. came over to move the truck and take the tires off and found the front right tire was flat... RUN FLATS to the rescue. i also parked the truck in mud and with the front left brakes locked up and the front right dragging badly i tried to back out in 2wd.

with an open differential only 1 tire was doing the work and it pretty much CLAWED its way out of the mud and shredded the turf pretty good. i put it in 4low and powered out just to save time. it was great. after swapping the 31's back on i decided it was time to take the hub off and see just wtf has been going on with the bearings on the front left.. i didn't get pictures but i found why the bearings loosened was because the PO left the locking ring out so the nuts backed off, the grease was the consistency of dry mud and when i finally got the brake drum off and slid the hub off bearing rollers fell out all over the place. the cage was nowhere to be found and the inner and outer races were deeply grooved. now i need to find a temporary bearing to put in there so i can move the truck. im thinking there are spares in the shed or i might even have to borrow a bearing out of the dana 44 sitting in the yard.
thats the most time i've spent with this truck in 2 years, feels good man

Re: 8 HMMWV tires for free! what a christmas
i was at the junkyard friday and they had the same exact tires mounted on 8 lug ford truck rims. they were 36x 16.4 rims. they said they wanted 400.00 for the set. they were only used on the truck once. i didnt think they would fit my 94 F250 so i didnt bother with them. that and i didnt have 400.00.

yeah i thought about going and getting some 16.5" rims that have the right backspacing but then i think selling these things will get me some nice new 33" tires that will work better for me. it would be nice to have a toy that fit these things they are monsters in the mud even at 40psi

Those will look really cool. BTW, I really like your signature line.BRUTUS_T_HOG wrote:yeah i was going to do that next time i go that way during daylight. they might look funny without a lift though1971ford wrote:Dang! I want them just to put on every once in a while. They would be so cool to have.BRUTUS_T_HOG wrote:i might not even use them. i could sell all 8 and buy something smaller that fits my current rim.
i test fitted one of the wheels on a dana 44 i have and it fit perfect. street use wouldn't be much of a problem since the truck hardly ever sees the road anymore. i would just LOVE to get these monsters on the truck though they look mean as hell.
the rims have run flat rings in them too! my dad got them free out of a yard of about 100.. his boss got them at an auction for $10 each
Any chance you could put them on and take some pics?
