For me...I would not do more than a 25% notch before I started adding material to the top of the frame. Better Safe than Sorry. :2cents:

Since my enginering experience is limited to electric trains in my youth.... :D

How thick, and how long a piece would you add to the top of the frame? I'm planning to remove about 50% above the axle, then weld in a piece of thick wall tubing, boxing the frame around the new tube, midway on the width of the rail, and an outer plate as well.

I would try to keep the same 5" height as you move along the frame.

If you remove 2.5" (50%) I would try to add 2" back on top about 1' long.

If you don't want to cut into the bed, just add as much as you can (1" to 1.5") and you should be just fine.

Not yet...several other "projects" have reared their ugly head. I do have the material gathered up, and a disco brake rear as well. I'll take pictures as this progresses :D
