Hi 70_F100 and George, thanks for your great replies!
I got the area cleaned up; that RTV used by the engine builder made the gaskets hard to scrape off!

When I went back to NAPA today for the gaskets, I was fortunate to talk with a wise old parts guy, and I asked him if they had any 5/8" hose that was a little nicer than the regular Gates heater hose. He disappeared in to the parts area for a while and came back out with a section of "Premium" 5/8 hose. He mentioned that the jacket around it makes it more heat resistant than regular heater hose! And to my surprise, he gave me the section of hose!
You can see how much shorter I cut my hose, compared to the engine builder's smashed hose.
It's nice looking stuff. I'm not sure if it's also made by Gates or what.
70_F100, thanks for recommending the Aviation Cement! As chance would have it, I actually happened to have a bucket of that stuff on the shelf.
One of the new gaskets:
I painted a thin coating of the Aviation Cement on the side of the gasket facing the engine block. I didn't want to use much of this stuff on the side facing the water pump, since the water pump's aluminum and scraping gaskets off of aluminum is no fun!
Like it said on the bottle, I also put a thin coating of this stuff on the engine block.

Then I put the gaskets on the engine, using the bolts to make sure the locations were OK.

And here's the new hose, looking much better! In retrospect, I could have made it 1/16" longer, but I think it's OK as-is. I suppose there's no reason to cover up the threaded area on the water pump nipple with hose.
No more crazy kink on the underside of this thing!
This scenario has been resolved! Thanks very much to 70_F100, George, KaptnKA
