Hey KaptnKA 8) S thanks for replying!

Yeah that didn't look too healthy did it? I was surprised with how pinched off it was under there.
kaptnkaos wrote:It looks like the old hose is bulged from the clamp forward, just making it look larger.
If you look at where the flat part of the hose starts to curve out...
that line and outside line of the new hose look to be exactly the same size.
Oh okay, I see what you're saying. I'll have to take a closer look when I have them side-by-side tomorrow again. You're probably right.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to the driving experience!

Thanks for your great reply KaptnKA 8) S!

They probably used a gasket sealant when they assembled it, which is what I would do. Bare steel to bare steel with only silicone in something high pressure is asking for a failure, IMO.
I'm amazed they didn't have those gaskets in stock, those are usually very easy to find. I'd check somewhere else.

Okay, got it! Two votes so far for the gaskets means I'll find 'em and go that route.

Based on what you can see from the pictures, what type gasket sealant does it look like they used? Is it that runny black stuff that looks like molasses? Or some thicker, RTV rubber type of sealant?

Yeah I was surprised too! I'll search around locally today and see what I can come up with.

Thanks again for your great reply ToughOldFord!

I had trouble finding just the water pump gaskets also so I bought a sheet of gasket material and used my old ones for a pattern and made new ones. You could even use the water pump to make a pattern. I do this when I need a gasket or two and don't want to waste time running them down. A utility knife or a single edge razor blade cuts them easily. I used a little permatex #2 to stick them to the pump. Use a litle RTV on the bolts as at leat one goes into the water jacket. :2cents:

Hi 70_F100 and George, thanks for your great replies!

I got the area cleaned up; that RTV used by the engine builder made the gaskets hard to scrape off!

When I went back to NAPA today for the gaskets, I was fortunate to talk with a wise old parts guy, and I asked him if they had any 5/8" hose that was a little nicer than the regular Gates heater hose. He disappeared in to the parts area for a while and came back out with a section of "Premium" 5/8 hose. He mentioned that the jacket around it makes it more heat resistant than regular heater hose! And to my surprise, he gave me the section of hose!

Image

You can see how much shorter I cut my hose, compared to the engine builder's smashed hose.

Image

It's nice looking stuff. I'm not sure if it's also made by Gates or what.

Image

70_F100, thanks for recommending the Aviation Cement! As chance would have it, I actually happened to have a bucket of that stuff on the shelf.

Image

One of the new gaskets:

Image

I painted a thin coating of the Aviation Cement on the side of the gasket facing the engine block. I didn't want to use much of this stuff on the side facing the water pump, since the water pump's aluminum and scraping gaskets off of aluminum is no fun!

Image

Like it said on the bottle, I also put a thin coating of this stuff on the engine block.

ImageImage

Then I put the gaskets on the engine, using the bolts to make sure the locations were OK.

ImageImage

And here's the new hose, looking much better! In retrospect, I could have made it 1/16" longer, but I think it's OK as-is. I suppose there's no reason to cover up the threaded area on the water pump nipple with hose.

Image

No more crazy kink on the underside of this thing!

This scenario has been resolved! Thanks very much to 70_F100, George, KaptnKA 8) S, Fordman, Jamie, ToughOldFord, and Robert for your truly excellent and generous advice!

robroy, your clamps are about 1.5 degrees offset from one another... :nono:

Just kidding, looks GREAT!!!

Hey ToughOldFord and 70_F100, thanks for replying!

Yeah I'm completely pleased with how this turned out, and I won't have to wonder about it later on. I also got to a potentially enhanced job of sealing the pump against the engine block, so it was a worthwhile upgrade all around.

Thanks again!
