It was a while ago..... mostly before ricers. But when a kid in his hot Camaro is winning a street light drag race, the last thing he expects to see looming in his rear view is a beat up 69 ford truck grille.......cghstrojan08 wrote:Welcome. My TriPower doesn't get very good mileage. What's the problem?

re: Hello from the Latest Johnny come Lately from CO
My truck is finally home! The weather looked like it would be nice, and I was able to round up a friend to follow me home in my car. The weather was about as good as it gets for January.
When we got there, I replaced the 6 bent and missing pushrods that I had determined was the reason for the motor knocking. She fired up and ran like she needed a tune up. The knocking was gone! Unfortunately, there are currently 19 pushrods taking up residence in the engine. I was unable to fish any out.
I replaced the drive shaft that had been removed, and we were off. We stopped for a quick fill up, and to adjust the idle. It wanted to die at stops, and the pancake starter solenoid seems to need replacing. The power brakes seem to be on vacation as well....
All went well for about 50 miles. The truck seemed to run well, and was smooth. However in central Denver, on the freeway, the engine sputtered and died. I didn't think it possible that the truck drank 14 gallons in 50 miles. It didn't. However, soon it started up again. I got off the freeway and about 6 blocks later, it died again. No shoulder to pull of on. We towed the truck to a parking spot, and I pulled the filter can off the fuel pump. Yucky nasty rusty gas. Off to the parts store for a fuel pump. (Not that much more than a fuel filter) I soaked myself in gas trimming the supply hose, but I got it changed in about 25 minutes.
About 5 miles down the freeway, dead again. I am getting tired of figuring a way of pulling off safely, dead stick. This time I pull the supply hose off the fuel pump and nothing. For a minute. Then, slowly, a trickle. I got a coke bottle and filled it up. Yep. Filthy.
I let the gas settle out as much as possible, then filled the carb through the vent tube. BTW, I hope that the useless hopped up dodge diesel driving **** that thought it would be funny to blast me with diesel soot wrecks that POS into a tree tonight. Anyway, it started again and I got the truck to a safe spot.
I pulled the sending unit out of the tank. I tried sticking something into the tank to dislodge the gunk from the pickup. It may have worked, but I did not trust that to get me home. I went into the camper and found a water line that I could easily replace and I disconnected the fuel line from the top of the tank, put the hose on it, and stuck it down into the hole from the missing sending unit. Success! I got home, and the only other problem was that I had to breath heavy duty gas fumes for about 25 miles.
I still smell like gasoline Pictures tomorrow.

That was quite a trip. I would have been pulling my hair out swearing about half way through.

I hope that some pictures will help to move this thread out of the "useless" category.
Gotta love that spare tire rack! Or not.
The interior is pretty nice, I think it will clean up well! I needed to vacuum out quite a bit of rodent squeezings.
That's about it for rust. There are a couple of dents on the hood, there is the fender rust, and the holes in the side of the bed where the camper hold down hooks were put in. Just enough that I probably will need to paint it. Too bad, because the paint that is on it is pretty nice. The big ol camper is pretty nice on the inside as well!

Thats a nice lookin bumpside - once you get the kinks ironed out, she'll be good to ya.
Glad you made it in one piece, and i'll join in with wishing 'bad ju-ju' on the Dodge dork.
