Is this what you mean by an airfoil?

Kidding of course... don't ask me... it came from the PO like that. It does work though! We had 50mph winds in this last storm, and that sucker was moving just like a weather vane! Took ol' Tug for a spin, and it straightened right back like you see it in the pic.

Is this some kinda ol' skool antenna mod or something?

Ya know, I've wondered the same thing! It definitely looks like it was done on purpose - very smooth curves, no kinks at all.

Go figger... :?

the airfoil type are holow in the middles. they are almost shaped like a triangle. that could be a pic of one. it looks like it anyway.

I think it is (or was) the airfoil design - I pulled off the mast, and took a pic of the profile:

Also took a closer pic of the rectangular mount for reference:

But they weren't shaped like that top to bottom! I've never seen such a thing... Mugwump's antenna stub is the same as mine, but I've never seen an antenna "swoop" like that top to bottom. He's definitely got an original "airfoil" (teardrop) antenna, but either that truck was parked in a hellacious hurricane or someone had some fun with it somehow in the last 40 years.

Actually, he said "it came from the PO like that" ... and the windstorm was making it spin.

It would take some seriously consistent pressure to bend an antenna like that. I think that one has been bent that way on purpose for some reason. Probably something we'll never figure out... like the PO had a barn or garage with a beam or shelf that the hood fit up under but not the antenna, so he "adjusted" the antenna.

 - the antenna was bent into that shape by a previous owner - It really looks like it was done intentionally... someone did a nice job bending it without kinking or cracking it. It's funny - i have more people commenting about that freakin antenna than about the rest of the truck!

Anyone else out there have a clue why they might have done it? It really does keep it lined up when you're driving it, but it sure looks funky! :dk:

I guess a better question than 'why did they do it' is 'how can I un-do it?' :maybe:

Think I should attempt a straightening of the mast? No Viagra jokes, please... I'd rather have a crooked mast that works than a cracked one that doesn't.
