There's nothing wrong with split rims. In all truth, you have to be a moron to screw up a split rim. The "widow maker" split rims are the center split type. The locking ring is in the center of the wheel where you can't see it. These are the only ones you need a cage and some experience with.
I've put lots of miles on widow maker wheels on my '70. In fact, I'd go as far as say they're the least problematic wheels and tires I've ever owned. I've never even had to put air in them.
Tire shop employees are minumum wage employees for the most part. You don't need much more skill to change a tire than you do to flip a burger.
