Glad to meet you guys! Anybody know when the gallery will be up (or is it just me)? I'd love see some of the rides.

Stolen and returned

Post by sargentrs »

Here you go Thunderfoot!

I took a week's vacation and took "baby" down to the block. Had a leaky head gasket. Replaced all the gaskets, put a new timing chain on, cleaned her up and give her new fire (points, plugs, wires, coil, etc.) Rebuilt the carb (Autolite 2100) and added a new fuel pump. And, while I was at it, new solenoid and voltage regulator (had a problem that turned out to be just a loose wire but I had already replaced 'em so what the heck). Got her put back together and tuned her in. She was running better than she had in the 3 years I had her so I took her for a test run......I'm goin' to Walmart. Drove her wide open from Jasper to Ellijay (about 20 mins) and she ran SWEET! Parked her at 5:30pm and went in to buy groceries. Came out 45 mins. later and she was GONE! Got it on the security video, he backed her out and took off at 5:45! Cops said he must have been watching for the right one to pull in and I guess I was it. Video was so bad couldn't get a face or a license plate of his buddy in the '87 Ranger. I hounded the cops for about 3 months and then gave up.

Last April I got a phone call from the East Ellijay police chief telling me that they had found her. Apparently, the guy left Ellijay and headed for Tennessee via Hiwassee. (You GA boys probably know where I'm talking about). Coming thru Hiwassee, he got pulled over for a traffic violation and they found out he had an out of state warrant (N. Dakota) so they arrested him and towed my truck to the wrecker yard. They arrested him at 7:30pm, less than 2 hours after he stole my truck! When they ran the plates, it hadn't made it to the network yet so it came up clean. The guy at the wrecker yard had someone that wanted to buy the rear end out from under her and he ran the plates again before he started parting her out and it came up stolen. I went to pick her up, hooked up the jumper cables, shot a little gas in the carb and she fired right up! Cost me a wrecker fee and a year's worth of storage charges, the guy settled for $185. Brought her home that day and we've been happy ever since!

Sorry to be so long winded but it's my favorite story!

Happened to my cousin as well. His 70 was stolen and recovered 3 months later at an impound lot in Atlanta where it has sat all spring with no drivers side window. The interior was damaged so he sold it out of disgust.

That IS a good story  At least he didn't have it long enough to trash it and all your new parts are still good. To bad the impound yard had it so long before contacting you... but at least they finally did...
Glad you got her back

The Photo gallery is in the process of being moved to new server as is this forum some day soon... Haven't heard any updates on that lately but the forum will be down a few days when it does the final swap from what we were told...

Yeah, I was heartbroken when she got stolen. Ugly as all get out but I love her dearly. When the cop called and told me I said, "Man, you've got to be kidding, don't even tease me like that!" I thought it was a gag at first, I had given up hope months ago. The guy popped the hood and hot wired it, I found a stray piece of wire on the solenoid, then later down the road, snatched the ignition and used a screwdriver to crank it. But she's back now and I can't wait to start working on her and prettying her up some. My wife absolutely refuses to ride in her right now  Couple of other minor things, the tranny tailstock seal started leaking while she sat, the shifter (I had to put a floor in when the column shift got flaky before she was stolen) was loose as a goose. Somebody (probably at the wrecker yard) stole my CD/radio and my toolbox. I had just sanded and primered the hood and while it sat, she rusted up again. Put a new ignition switch in it but I've still gotta replace the door locks 'cause I chunked the keys months back, so I can't lock it. She runs great though! I'll post a pic when the gallery comes up.

Here's a pic before she was stolen. Dig the custom grill! Made at the fab shop where I work. The originals were shot when I got her.
