Isnt there a slide-hammer type puller that is used specifically for pulling the axles out?
Yes, but.

You have to get the drum off and remove the 4 nuts on the bearing retainer/backing plate.
...and if you don't have access to a slide hammer, here's a quick trick that'll work 99.9% of the time.

First of all, obviously you'll have to remove the drum and then the four nuts holding the axle mouting flange to the axle tube:

Then just reinstall the drum backwards, and thread at least three of the lugnuts back on a few turns:

...and simply use the drum as the slide hammer. Normally a few pops in an outwardly direction will slide a stuck axle right out: :D

:? 9" 1/2 tonne right?
first back off the adjuster

if that don't work the old auto wrecker trick, is to strike the rusted drum at the top front right on the part that the thickest. ( the front of the lip that the shoes ride in. but don't beat the living crap out of it. all it takes is a couple solid strikes at 12,3,6 & 9 o'clock. What it dose is sends a shock wave to the rusted parts and freeze it up. Never stick the drum from the weakest part the back lip or the front thin part it causes a big chip/ or smashed drum or worse a fracture thats hard to detect, meaning the drum can come apart when rolling down the road.

and heating the center of a drum you can warp the drum and change the irons temper in the center around the studs so most shops really don't recommend it. nothing sucks more than a strange vibration and a drum that warped so bad you can't turn it, or worse the center pops under hard braking.
and for the axle your needing a slide puller really. I have done it with a drift though the axle bolt retaining holes, and a hammer. or with a big pry bar but its a real pain not using the right tools. and you chancing damaging parts.

i had the same problem on my 4x4, so i pulled the hubs out, and dropped the drum and spindle off. then i put it on concrete and put a 2x6 on the spindle and whacked it with a sledge until it came off. It had rusted the drum and spindle together. i tried everything to get it off, pb blaster, torch, screwdrivers ect. so finally i figured i would just pull the hubs off that way i could put new bearings and races in to.
