google "how to measure backspacing"

get u a (what they call) "plumb bob" or any type of weight theat can be tied to a string DEAD TOP CENTER stick a piece of 1/4 inch steel on the inside edge of the lip (hammer it in if u are going to first) and hang the weight from that. thats the FARTHEST OUT your wheel needs to go.

that way your wheel can tuck and ur bed has a tiny bit of room to flex when u launch and everything. id still brace the hell out of it no matter what though.

once u measure your backspacing u will know the MAX wheel u can run. its a fairly simple process, there are a few very detailed how-to's

Biggest and hardest thing for me is the actual narrowing of the rear end. Like I said before, I know how to weld and can weld pretty good (not bragging, just saying that I am not someone that thinks they can blob some bead on and think it's good enough). So I would like to do it myself but I don't know enough about the bearings and all that and what to do there. I could just buy the axles that is not a problem. Heck, I don't know anymore, I don't have a ton of money to spend on shipping and then pay 120 bucks on top of that to get narrowed and pay again to get shipped back and also pay for the axles, brakes and shipping on that too.

any reputable axle shop should be able to shorten a ford 9 inch....

Just getting 2 short axles will narrow the rearend about 2 5/8" and the center will be about that much off. I have a 62 unibody with 15x10 wheels and about 4" back space and they clear fine. To run wider rims they would have to have all the extra width to the inside. To get the narrowest 9" from the factory look for a early Bronco.That thing is narrower than a 57 car which is the next to narrowest, I think. I am not sure what the bolt pattern on the early Bronco is, but it doesnt matter because you ate wanting wider wheels anyway.
