front cab mounts shot.

Post by notsofine69 »

sorry I dont have pics but I just picked up my 69 f250 from down south and the front mounts are holeyand parlty disconnected, I thought only midwest trucks did that.there was a large mouse nest in one. my question is does anyone have experience with either the LMC or JCWhitney kits. the Whitney describes its part as a cover or an install over the original. I would rather be out with the old and have a new box piece welded in. I will post pics later. thanks. :?

If the 250 and 100 mounts are the same. I just removed my frame for newer setup. my mounts are solid. would replace rubber part though, but metal support is in great shape. Not sure on shipping from central Illinois.

Dennis Carpenter makes the best mounts. I out 'em on my truck and was very pleased. They do come unpainted so you will have some prep work to do.

I have the same problem with my 71 f100. it looks like LMC has the complete replacment sheet metal for the mounts on the cab. cut them out and weld the new ones on. this is what Im doing. I am calling LMC tomorrow to make sure the sheet metal is replaced instead of being slipped over. although if its just slip over metal than I can convert the rust and weld in the slip overs. I beleive this is the best way to do it. if you wanted a cheep fix I would use a bender and bend an L shape bar and bolt the top to the good metal on the cab and the bottom of the L on the mount of the chassis. one way to do it . quick and easy and no welding. depends on how stock of a job you want to do.

How do you remove the old cab mounts? Are they welded, spot welded or what? Is there a need for preise fitting of the new mounts or are they self-aligning? I was sandblasting the underside of an otherwise rust-free cab and found bad mounts.

Thanks!

i found a 71 at the junk yard with the same problem most of ours have, the shot cab metal for the cab mounts. The fix they had done to it was make a really big L bracket out of 3/16th gauge steel. they bolted it right up. easy fix to me. I might just do that myself.

Sounds about like this one that I also ran across at a salvage yard:

Keith,
That may be ugly but I'll bet its less likely to rust than the original. It has no place for dirt and water to collect and cause rust.

I'm still unsure how to remove a cab mount. Can anyone help? Pictures would be great.

When I removed my first set of rusty mounts, I had the cab off the truck and sitting on it's back, for easy access. I just used the a cut-off tool to cut away 98% of the mount, then used an angle grinder to remove the flange left behind:

Knowing what I know now, I'd definitely just drill out the spotwelds, if I had access to them. Of course, if you're replacing them on an assembled running truck, you're probably not going to want to have to tear things down enough to roll the cab back, so you're probably stuck using the cut-off tool and grinder method.
