XXX XXXXX hood hinges

Post by HugYourPlumber »

i've got those xxx xxxxxx hood hinges...you know those ones that cause the hood to sag low enough to bang your head against the hood latch and yell xxx xxxxxx every time you forget about it. Where can i score some new springs? or can someone suggest something other than a broomstick to hold the hood up higher? :cuss:

Well I have put in new spring one or twice, I used some chrome ones I saw at a speed shop, & I 'll never do that again what a pain in the butt, dam near lots my thumb when the spring let go, took over twenty stitches
to put my hand back together.

I now just leave those evil things alone and use a old broom stick to holed the hood up. or Try to find some good hinges at an autowecker. an old tennis ball with a cut in it also works to cover that latch.

Ok,OK, I got it you don't think the broom stick is a good idea.

good luck

With my old hood hinges I had to use vise grips on the hinge to hold it open enough to work on, then one day I forgot to remove them before closing the hood. After that the hood really closed funny!

Seems like a common problem....Either DC or LMC sells a nice repro set but its too pricy for me..........I scored a set on ebay for about 10.00 and they seem to come up every so often there.Course they may not be any better than the ones you have.

Man I'm glad I have good springs and hinges. I cna't stand to hit my herad. I have a bald head and it doesn't take much to cut my head.

so...... Has no-one rebuilt these hinges? I am thinking of re-doing mine. The rivets that hold mine together are getting loose. I am thinking about enlarging rivet holes to smallest standard size possible elimination oblonged holes from worn rivets, then using short bolts with castle nuts drilled for cotter pin. Or should i use Nylock nuts? At any rate I would use a brass washer between layers of metal. I'm Thinking Those would come out pretty nice. Can someone give me some feedback? A poll if you will. Does this sound Good? or am I missing something?

rebuilding them would be a good hobby to see if it could be done but the junkuards are full of those hinges. as well as ebay

I agree....why spend so much time and money trying to rebuild something that you can almost get for asking at the salvage yards?

yes and no
you need to long gate the top holes (for the hood) about a inch for the hinges to work. they work best with the mid 70's inner fender though,

no they won't work because they sit outside the fender well and bumpsides sit inside the fender well. the only way to do it is to replace the fender wells with a 73-79 well like leadfoot said.

Hey,I see these hinges all the time at boneyards,...but usually the hood is already gone....Without the weight of the hood on them, how do you know if those junkyard hinges aren't just as saggy as the one's you're replacing?...
This is the point...I'm....talking about everybody! I'm talking about form! I'm talking about content! I'm talking about interrelationships! I'm talking about God, the devil, hell, heaven!!!! Do you understand???? Finally!!!!

That is also my concern...How do we know the boneyard hinges aren't just as bad?

I want to order new springs but after reading about the stiches and all I am really weary about it.
