71 "B" paint code

Post by dotcentral »

I am sure it is a "B" - not an 8, or a 3, or any other letter/number. Truck seems to have the original color, or close to it. I don't think it was swiss aqua (which I think is "3"). See the tag attached.

Any guesses?

Interesting, looks like a B to me. On a side note mine was originally blue but I forget the code on it. Gonna go look now.

yeah its special order check your dso number of 15 in nj. its probably wind blue from 72 or it could have been royal marron from 70. to see the true color look under the dashpad. or maybe the bottom of the dash.

It is a B code, sorry if that wasn't clear.

IT's a friends truck so it s not handy to check, but has a explorer blue interior (which matches the door tag). I think it has been resprayed, but in close to the same color? Just guessing on that. sort of doubt it was maroon with that interior.

Paint codes can jump a lot from year to year, this truck looks to be in the middle of the production run, so less chance of it being a 72 code?

thanks.

You said the truck has an "Explorer blue interior"....is the truck an actually Explorer? That might be why the code isn't listed, since the Explorer was a special mid-year model and the codes wouldn't have been listed with the others.

I've got a final 1975 copy of the Ford Master Parts Catalog for the '67-'72 trucks on microfiche that should have that code, give me a couple days and I'll see if I can find it.

It is a custom, but has padded door panels. also has the upper trim molding. Unusual maybe? Guess it could have been "upgraded" at some point in time by a previous owner.

I don't think it is a true Explorer, no badging to indicate that. I called it explorer blue based on your 71 vin decoding info. It lists this as the interior color available for the Custom trim level, and this matches the door tag info.

Am I off a spot? I have the top line as 131 B F103 1 4 C 17

Longbed, Exterior color B, 4500 GVR, right?

Then I read 1 as Custom Trim level color explorer blue

Then I thought 4 would be the bed & body type - flareside, styleside, etc.

c 17 would be lt duty 3 speed manual, 3.25 rear end gear.

Maybe I am reading the 71 chart wrong. It's a little confusing to me.

also sometimes it is a different door/different vin tag.
