Redoing my interior,a few questions...
There's an earlier thread about LMC and Carpenter carpets, but for a little less,I have a local guy who cuts his own and installs it just perfect...Plus,I'm going to have him do the kick panels and door bottoms.....Question #1,any body have pics or know any details on covering the in-cab tank with carpet, since I'm going to have buckets,I want it to look right...#2,what about the detail over that fire wall cover...I know the factory carpeted trucks had an extra piece to cover that, but I don't know how it's fastened...
#3....I want to redo the headliner in a vinyl to match new door panels I'm having made, with some pleats or stitching in it...Is that idea feasible?...I know the factory ones get warped and misshaped over time, and with only one screw holding the middle in place,I'm wondering if a heavier, vinyl stitched headliner will just end up bowing down on top of my head in a short matter of time...Muchos gracias...

i think the carpet goes under the firewall cover. and the cover holds it in place since it was originally molded carpet. as far as the gas tank why could you use carpet glue to glue it to the tank? just don't press it into the voids of the tank. or make a cover out of underlayment and glue the carpet to that.

Thanks,jd...$24,999,eh?....Hmmmm,...lemme get back to you on that
I think you're right about the carpet fitting under the firewall cover,Fordman, and mine is in real nice shape...I just remember when I did my last truck having a heck of a time pulling the cover back w/o breaking it so I could slide the preformed carpet underneath...As to covering the gas tank area,I'd be interested to see what the ones with factory bucket seats looked like because there's also some 3D dead space to fill in there....

There was a guy listing a '71 Camper Special on E-bay a while back. The original buckets had been replaced with some from another vehicle, but the rest was still intact. I had to contact him and act like I was interested in the truck just so I could get him to send me the following shot of the factory tank cover:
There was a special 2-piece chrome strip that ran along the top of the cover. I've seen one set listed on E-bay in the last 3-4 years. I bid on it but got outbid by a large margin.

Hey,thanks for that pic,Keith...I thought there might be some hardware or something back there...One option I have with my truck is the p. o. had one of those camper crawl-through window boots around the back window that was held on with those snaps....The snaps are still there, and I suppose I could use the lower ones to hold the carpeting---Not factory, but who's to know?

If I get a chance I will take some pics of my Bro in laws 67 with custom door panels, headliner, and seat cover. It might be a day or two but I will get them.

Hey Joe.......my old El Camino had carpet covering the whole area behind the seat covered in carpet...The top had those black Plastic "body plugs" holding the carpet up across the top(not practical for a gas tank)but the neat part was the ends of the carpet on each side was held in place with VELCRO............Go VELCRO man....holds up well and easy to remove if necessary.

Hey,Big D,thanks for posting those....That interior flows real nicely, and looks very comfy...Gives me some good ideas on what to do with mine---among other things, vacuum the carpet before I take pics of it ...Nice job...looks like now you're gettin' dangerous with a camera .....
I was wondering that,myself,Spartman....Same with the door panels...

Re: re: Redoing my interior,a few questions...
I believe that the headliner and door panels are just flat board made off the originals covered with the material and padding. I'm trying with the camera. I didn't think they loaded I got all pissed off night before last cause I thought they didn't load. Yeah it is not my truck so the vacuuming is on them.Joe Kriston wrote:Hey,Big D,thanks for posting those....That interior flows real nicely, and looks very comfy...Gives me some good ideas on what to do with mine---among other things, vacuum the carpet before I take pics of it ...Nice job...looks like now you're gettin' dangerous with a camera .....
