New Steering box installed

Post by mcarlson11 »

I took a huge risk today, and got the new steering box installed.

I have school tomarrow and work, so if something went wrong, I would be out of transportation. I went for it anyways.

New Rebuilt power steering box from NAPA. $179

I went to take pitman arm off, thinking its going to be really tight, I could almost take it off with my fingers, kinda scary. Reason why, the lock washer had broken in half. Then my pitman arm puller that I had bought, wouldnt fit, so I used a steering wheel puller with the forks it came with, but didnt even need that, the pitman arm was loose on the shaft, most likely from the nut not being tight. The gears/ sprockets on the pitman arm looked like new, so it wasnt because of that.

after I get the steering box out, I notice that the fuel line has been pinched, this must have happened when I did the brake/steering swap back in january. So I will need to fix that this weekend.

Any how, I got it all back together, and No more FREE play. Much tighter steering and control then before. So the box was my play culprit.

Oh, and the reason why I replaced it, was becuase it was leaking about 1/2 a quart a day in fluid.

So if you guys are leaking for "New" steering boxes, napa has them in both manual and power steering.

I also found that the upper radiator hose for my 352 was available for special order. This is the only place I found that had this available at all. pt # for hose is: nbh7443 cost $20
