primer grey

Post by Billybobjunky »

ok guys, I wanna go with the easy sleeper look of primer grey. It fits me perfect, so i've already gone with that choice. Question is, what do I need to do in particular? I'm gonna knock all the old paint and primer off to bare metal. Do I need to "metal-prep" the metal or whatever, or just sand it down bare, then wet sand it real smooth with 1000 or so and then just shoot it? thanks guys!

Grey is a variant of the word gray. They're the same. If you're gonna go with primer, shoot on epoxy primer. It costs more but is water resistant.

well if your going to go down to bare metal use like 180 or 220 grit...then give it a pass with 400...prep the metal then shoot a self etching primer on it..or filler primer. give if like 3 coats....then when that is dry give it a light sand with like 800 and you should have a smooth primer finish....becareful when you wet sanding....its just a light sand...if you get carried away you will go down to bare metal again....then its back to square one....

By all means, go to bare metal, then rough buzz it with 80 grit on a DA, then go with all the metal prep and stuff. The primer needs a good scratch to aid with tooth adhesion, and 400 just doesn't do it for long.. been there, done that. Don't worry, you're not going to see these scratches through the primer. Make sure that the grey primer you shoot is a primer/SEALER <-- This is VERY important!!!! Primers (even most epoxy primers) are porous, to aid in tooth adhesion of the topcoat. The best thing you can do is find a good, educated paint salesman, or call a tech rep for whatever paint brand you're using and FOLLOW THEIR DIRECTIONS SPECIFICALLY!!!!!
