Jack Stand Placement

Post by HOWDY69 »

I have acquired a floor jack and two jack stands and am getting ready to inspect my steering. What is the best location for the jack and for the jack stands. I was thinking about putting the stands under the frame but didn't know if there is anything holding the springs in.

I want to be able to wiggle the tires and check for slop so I want the front wheels free of the ground.

I place the jack under the cross member and the stands under the I-beams. I usually put a block of wood between the jack pad and the cross member to distribute the load better. See photos.

The springs won't go anywhere. They are bolted to the I-beam at the bottom, and at the top they are secured with a clip that is bolted to the spring/shock mount.

Howdy69, you can also have someone turn the steering wheel and you can watch to see if there is any play while there is still weight on the wheels. Sometimes it will show up better because the extra force from the wheel.
