un-Welding Trim holes?

Post by Fake Name »

My truck arrived to me with a bogus paint job and had been de-chromed. It appears, from the very few places I can see, the holes were filled with goop, not welded.

Can someone please help a noob out and explain to me how the moldings were attached? Are there clips? Little threaded studs?

I'm considering having the paint shop uncover the holes when stripping the truck so I can reinstall the molding.

Thanks.

some clips were bolted on and some were riveted on.

Fn,the upper side moulding usually had clips that were riveted on in the middle, but the ends of the trim pieces were clips with a bolt going through it...The lower wide rocker moulding had all clips with bolts...If you are going to add the chrome, you are embarking on an expensive, ambitious adventure...Check out LMC or Dennis Carpenter for their prices on new mouldings(or even the mounting clips for that matter),and you may pursuade yourself to go with the clean-shaven look...Usually used stuff is door-dinged to death,if you can even find it...

I've had four bumpsides so far,and the first one was missing a few chrome pieces and I thought,no big deal...'Til I went through the adventure of replacing those few pieces...The last three, the first thing I looked at was the condition of the trim, because I like the look, and I know it's one of the more expensive things to replace...
This is the point...I'm....talking about everybody! I'm talking about form! I'm talking about content! I'm talking about interrelationships! I'm talking about God, the devil, hell, heaven!!!! Do you understand???? Finally!!!!

Here is a link to an ebay auction for some of the clips you would need:

You would need a lot more than supplied but this shows you what they looked like.

Thanks, everyone! Yes, the cost is prohibitive to buy all new brightwork, but I'll check into the clips. I'd probably skip the lowers entirely.

thanks again.

I am trying to do the same thing, minehas about 1/4 of the holes filled. IIRC a new Trim "set" is like $400 from the catalogs, I am going the used route since I just want the trim but nothing new. The biggest problem I see is the back hole is a lage oval or square the rest are just small holes.
