Paint is dry but gummy?

Post by Sharkdance »

This post is more of a warning about spraying Rustolium paint over laquer primer:

When I painted my frame I used Rustolium semi-gloss black over clean bare steel and it worked fantastically. Stuck real good. Dried nice and hard. And looked pretty good too.
So I decided to use the same paint on my fender aprons, core support, and gastank too.
In my famous effort to overdoo pretty much everything I do I cleaned and shot sandable laquer primer over everything. Sanded them down, cleaned them again, then shot the black and let it dry.
The next day it looked pretty good and the paint was dry but seemed like it was gummy underneath.
You could scratch it off with your nail and it would be gooey. Like it was dry but it wasn't really dry.
Well, that ain't gonna work. If the paint is so fragile you could scratch it off with your nail Id hate to imagine what it would look like after a few month on the truck. So it all has to be sanded down and re-done. (Just the core support and aprons)
I even tried letting them sit out in the sun all day to "bake" the paint on but it made no difference.
The only thing I can think of that I did wrong was prime the parts first with a laquer primer.
I've never had a problem with enamel over laquer before but apparently the Rustolium enamel didn't like the primer.

That could be your problem. They might have a chemical reaction to one another. It didn't cook the paint did it?

laquer takes a LONG time to dry, even after you think it's dry, it's not. A full laquer paint job can take up to a month to completely dry. Enamel on the other hand does not. It dries very quickly. When you shot enamel over the laquer you basically sealed in the laquer before it had a chance to dry comepletely. Also be warned, you can shoot enamel over laquer (if it's completely dry)but you can't shoot laquer over enamel, it will lift.

This I know. I have lived by this rule since I first started trying my hand at bodywork. (Many years ago)
I've NEVER had a problem like this before. And the laquer primer was shot over a week ago before spraying it with the Rustolium. So I know it was dry.
Looking back I think I figured out what the problem is. While Rustolium is an enamel paint, it says to thin it with Acetone. I think its the Acetone that reacted with the laquer primer. Probably wouldn't have had a problem if it was just brushed on. But what an amateur job that would look like then.

Anyway, now Im pissed!
I tried to sand it off so I could start over but its so gummy that it clogs up the paper in the first few seconds. Even tried a wire brush and paint removing disk. Same results. It gets all clogged up and then just starts spreading the goo everywhere.
I have so many things I need to be doing on this project instead of re-doing a whole days work like this.

If you have access to a heat gun, heat up the gummy paint, and scrape it off with a scraper. Should take off just the first layer, and will be quicker than trying to sand it off.
