Dana 44 Closed Knuckle cone Bearing shims

Post by bwlyon »

I have a 1971 f250 4x4. OK I a need to rebuild the Steering knuckles on my 3500 lb dana 44 axle, for the right side has a ton of play in it. The bearings, races, and seals a readily available; however I can' seem to locate any shims so I can adjust the preload on the bearings. Has any body done this overhaul and got away with using the old shims, and the preload be on the money. Or better yet does anyone know where I can get these shims.

Did you check the Ford dealer? Years ago when I rebuilt mine I got them there.

None that I know of haven't tore it apart yet. though I know that I need 60 to 90 in lbs of preload. Oh while I am here what about transfer case mount bushings, and I have a hub that the lock just keeps turning and won't lock the hub in.

T-case mounts are available in either poly or stock rubber. They are just basic mounts. 460 Crew has a line on them.
The selecter knob will be an issue. Both juck yard items unless you have upgraded Warn hubs. The "bigball" style is almost impossible to find now. They are known to break if miss used.

I would think your existing shims would work just fine. Don't mix them up. Like I said above, I used mine and everything worked out great. Once you get the new bearings and races in it will tighten right up.

 Heep. Bwlyon The polyurethane bushings I have the part # for are prothanes and can be purchased through a dealer that sells prothane products or I can get them for you from a place in town and ship them to you. The part # is 6-1601 FORD TRANS CS MT F150/250 76-E

Thanks 460 crew and heep70 I appreciate the info. I will order the Warn hubs and prothane bushings. Then I will cross my fingers on the shim issue; hopefully, when I pull the front end apart the old shims work out to be on the money.
