Dies while driving

Post by pkschmitty »

I have a 1971 ford f250 camper special. I have replaced the alternator, battery, fuel pump, cleaned the tank and lines and rebuilt the carb and got new spark plugs, wires and distributor cap. It does this thing where it will drive amazing for a few days and then will suddenly just stop working radomly. I went out and started it this morning and got in a bit later and was taking it down the road and it was running really rough then up and died around the corner. Its probably something super simple but im at a loss for what it could be, any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Here is something to check: "Another possibility is vapor lock. That is, the fuel in the lines is reaching the boiling point due to it being too close to the engine block and getting overheated. Usually just pulling the steel line away from the block will help prevent the line from soaking in so much heat. The problem is sometimes compounded by a previous owner removing the steel line from the fuel pump to the carburetor and replacing it was a rubber line, which tends to soak up heat faster than a steel line. Removing the rubber line and replacing it with the proper steel line (and making sure you don't have it resting against or very close to the engine) should help".

without being able to diagnose it while the problem is happening I will offer this, the newer condensers are pretty bad. if your still running points and have done a full tune up replacing the points and condenser, throw a new one at it. I have had a pertronix unit fail as well before. they both will run poorly then quit. My pertronix unit would run fine cold then when the engine was good and warmed up it would start to falter and stall the truck out. a coil will do the same thing.

I agree with 1972hiboy. I had this happen once. It would run fine then shut off. Start it back up get to the mailbox shut off. I put a new condenser in and it was fixed.

Ditto on the condensor - one thing I did though was get on ebay and bought NOS made in the USA Motorcraft point, condensors, and spark plugs.........I have had problems with the new stuff and since I've used the old stuff I haven't had a problem........the fuel problem 390FE1972 mentioned is also a possibility I had.......I solved mine by putting a 1 inch phenolic spacer under the carb......

Another vote for swapping out the condenser. I had a very similar problem and went through 3 or 4 brand new condensers before I got a good one. This is after cleaning and/or replacing everything between the gas cap and the intake manifold.
