Perkins Fords

Post by 69Highboy »

Does anyone on here have a ford with a Perkins 354 6 cylinder diesel in it? If you do, would you please tell me how it does on the road? I saw a few bumpsides that had them and halfway-sorta talked about putting one in my highboy but my dad says that older diesels are dogs and if I was gonna put a diesel in it to find a 7.3 or the likes. Is he right or are they decent engines? Also, what has to be done to put one in a truck? New motor mounts? New tranny? Is it any longer/shorter than a 390 with a 4-speed?

A 354 is way too big for a bump. A friends Massey Ferguson 1100 has one that we added a blower to and so does my dad's 34' cabin cruiser. Think 25-30% larger and heavier versus a 6bt Cummins for less power potential. The 6bt barely fits if you count raising the cab 1.5" on a 2wd and reworking the radiator support. My build thread shows what's needed to install one of those.
