'74 360 in a '70 truck - distributor options?

Post by redstone65 »

The 360 I swapped into my son's 1970 F-100 is from a '74, so the distributor has the 3 wire plug for a Duraspark module (which I don't have). As I see it, my options are:

1. Get a Duraspark I module and try to hook things up with jumpers so as not to molest the original '70 wiring too much.
2. Swap out the distributor with an all-in-one type unit like a Summit HEI or similar.
3. Swap out the distributor with a stock '70 model replacement and do a Pertronix conversion on it.

My only concern with swapping out the dizzy is that I don't know the internal state of this engine. All I know is that it was running when I bought it. But, parts of it look pretty rough (like the exhaust manifolds). So, if it's in bad shape inside I don't want to risk losing the oil pump shaft when I swap it out. I do still have the '70 engine 1-wire dizzy that seems to be ok.

Anyone have a suggestion on which route to take? Or, maybe a new option I haven't thought of?

My vote is for the Duraspark.
It's not hard to wire it up , and you should be able to find a used harness and make it easier. :2cents:

I actually came to the same conclusion today and ordered it. That’s a good idea on the harness. I’ll document what I do in the project thread for posterity.
