This is actually on a '64 Ranchero, but it's similar enough to the trucks that I figured I'd ask here.
I have manual steering, and a loose steering wheel. I can get the steering wheel snug by tightening down on the nut, but then it becomes difficult to turn (like something is binding). Is this a symptom of a bad steering wheel that needs replacing, or a worn steering column that needs rebuilding?
Thanks,
Joseph

Re: Steering Wheel Tightening Problem
Do you mean the steering wheel itself is loose or the steering at the wheels feels loose? I'd suspect the upper/lower column bearings or the rag joint.

Re: Steering Wheel Tightening Problem
The steering wheel itself is loose. If I hold it at 9:00 and 3:00, I can rock it back and forth. Not a lot, but it is there. If I snug it down enough to not rock, then it binds the steering itself. If I need a new steering wheel, I can get one. I just don't want to invest the time/money if it's something in the column instead.

You'll need to adjust the shifter / turn signal collar if memory serves.

Have you checked the splines in both the steering wheel and the steering shaft for worn/broken teeth?

Re: Steering Wheel Tightening Problem
I wouldn't be surprised if the shifting mechanism needs repositioning, now that you mention it. The PO put an AOD transmission, in place of a C4, and the positions of the transmission don't line up with the gear indicator on the column. The shifting works fine, but I do need to line things up right. I suppose it's possible he got things out of line when assembling everything.
I haven't checked the spines yet. I was thinking of that today. The spines for the wheel mount are aluminum, right? I hope so, because it will be a LOT easier to change the wheel than to change the column!

Re: Steering Wheel Tightening Problem
Doesn't the '64 share the Mustang setup with the solid shaft coming out of the box? Might be as simple as shifting the column down the shaft.

Hmmm, I'll have to look into that. I expect that there's quite a bit of crossover between the Ranchero and the Mustang.Ranchero50 wrote:Doesn't the '64 share the Mustang setup with the solid shaft coming out of the box? Might be as simple as shifting the column down the shaft.
