So my power steering gear box is sloppy, and it leaks. Where is the best place to get a good reliable rebuilt unit?
I checked locally at Readhead Steering Gears, and they want $526, with a $450 core charge.

Readhead is who I would have recommended. They are good, but as you found out, expensive! Presume you have a core so at least you'll get that back.

Rockauto lists several but I would probably go with the AC/Delco unit.

LMC carries them too. I believe they use Lares, another reputable company. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fb/full.aspx?Page=55
And this guy has a good reputation in the Fairlane community http://www.stangerssite.com/GBrebuilding.html

Try here:

I had them rebuild my Econoline box (1965) and one for a '65 F-250. FAN-TASTIC.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Much to ponder, but paying more than double for red paint will weigh heavily on my final decision.

Re: Best Source for Steering Gear Box?
I recently bought one from Autozone. Complete new assy form China and am not impressed with it as the gear mesh is wonky and the power assist isn't consistent. I've put about 200 miles on it and am ready to trade it in on another. Lifetime warranty so they'll swap it out for free but still it's a PITA to change...

Not sure if you made a purchase decision but I ordered a Redhead box in September and chose the quicker ratio box. Three turns lock to lock instead of 4 turns. Total game changer. Steers like a modern vehicle. They are expensive but I did not find anyone else offering the quicker ratio box.
